Now, it is possible to develop in Python directly without having to install Visual Studio. PyCharm provides Python tools for the Raspberry Pi, including many of the same features available on the desktop and PyCharm Professional Edition.

The Raspberry Pi is often used to teach programming (which is exactly what it was designed for). The standard editors are suitable for beginners, but if you’re serious about programming on your Raspberry Pi, you may need to look for a better alternative. Today we will see how to install PyCharm on the Raspberry Pi.

PyCharm offers a free community version on its website. The Linux startup file is already compiled, so the PyCharm IDE can be started directly by executing

Performing once is fine, but the idea of this article is to go further. I’ll show you everything so you can make the most of it.

Installing PyCharm on the Raspberry Pi operating system

PyCharm is one of the most popular IDEs for programmers, especially in Python, along with Eclipse and Visual Studio. The results in terms of market share vary too much, from 7% for the highest FDI index to 35% for JetBrains, the publisher of PyCharm ^^.

PyCharm is well known in the industry and has the best features you would expect from an IDE. So we will learn how to install it on our Raspberry Pi.

Download Community version

PyCharm has two versions:

  • The professional version, which requires a license (about $200 per year).
  • Community Edition, which is open and free to use

In this guide we will try the Community edition, but there is a free trial for Professional if you are interested.

Extracting files

You should receive a tar.gz file in the Downloads folder. You have to get everything out:

  • Open the file manager (the shortcut is in the top bar).
  • Go to /home/pi/Downloads.
  • Find the PyCharm archive and right-click on it.
  • Select Eject here and wait a few seconds:

A new folder is created that contains all the files.
If you prefer the command line, you can also start a terminal and run:
tar -zxvf pycharm-community-A.B.C.tar.gz
Replace A.B.C with the version number you downloaded (tip: use the tab to autofill the file name).

Installing Java

Before we do anything else, we need to install Java. If you try to run it directly on a new installation of Raspberry Pi OS, it will not work.
I’ll show you how to do this in the GUI, but you can find the command line at the end of this section if you want:

  • In the main menu, select Options > Add/Remove software.
  • Type openjdk into the search engine on the left,
  • Install the package named opendjk-11-jdk:

  • If you are using the full version or already have Java applications installed, it may already be installed.
    However, this is not the case on the fresh desktop of the Raspberry Pi OS.

And here’s how to do the same thing with a single command line:
sudo apt install opendjk-11-jdk
That’s it, now we can run PyCharm!

First transit

Since there is no installation wizard for PyCharm, you will not find it in the main menu.
We’ll come back to this later, but for now you can try running it from the :

  • Open the file manager again and go to /home/pi/Downloads.
  • Navigate to the folder you just extracted (pycharm-community-A.B.C).
  • The executable file is located in the bin subfolder.
  • Double-click on the file.
  • In the pop-up window, choose Run.

That’s it, PyCharm should run immediately. You must accept the user agreement, then the interface will start.

Then you can use it as you normally would, I suppose.
The purpose of this guide is not to show you how to use PyCharm. If you are using it for the first time, you can easily find help online.

PyCharm installation improvement

If you’re used to reading my articles, you know that I always try to add some bonus tips. After installing PyCharm, there are at least two things you can do to improve your experience.

Move files to a safer location

I don’t know about you, but in my case I consider the Downloads folder to be a temporary folder. The files it contains are rarely needed more than once.
Once there are too many files, I delete them all or at least move the files to a sub-folder to make sure I don’t need them.

In any case, it is not a good habit to keep your applications in your downloads folder. If there is no installation wizard, it is recommended to move it to another folder (e.g. /opt). That’s exactly what we’re going to do:

  • Close PyCharm if it is still active.
  • Open the terminal.
  • Run the following command:
    sudo mv /home/pi/Dowloads/pycharm-community-A.B.C /opt/
    Remember to replace A.B.C with the version number you have.

We need to use the terminal because the default user on the Raspberry Pi (pi) is not allowed to write to the /opt directory.
You can now start PyCharm from the /opt directory instead of /home/pi/Downloads.
But this is not very practical, so I will show you how to create a shortcut in the main menu.

Create a shortcut for PyCharm in the main menu

If there is no installation wizard, we need to create a shortcut manually:

  • Open the main menu.
  • Go to the main menu Options > Editor.
  • Click on Programming on the left.
  • Then New element on the right.
  • A form will appear, fill it in as follows:
    • Name: PyCharm
    • Command: /opt/pycharm-community-A.B.C/bin/
    • Comment: Not required, you can leave this field blank.
    • You can also click on the image on the left and add an icon.
      The PNG file is located in the bin directory of the PyCharm program.

  • Press OK to confirm.

The new item should now be available in the main menu, under programming: alt= width=497 height=515 data-ez= data-ezsrc=–.jpg />.
